Tailgating Before Easter Devotional Guide

Rev. Dr. Charley Reeb   -

This week’s passage: Matthew 16:21-26

In this passage, Jesus begins to openly share with his disciples about his impending suffering, death, and resurrection. He challenges the traditional expectations of the Messiah and emphasizes the need for self-denial and taking up one’s cross to follow him.

Monday: Why do you think Jesus chose to reveal his suffering and death to his disciples at this moment? What does this teach us about his mission?

Tuesday: How does Peter’s response to Jesus reflect a common human tendency to resist the idea of suffering? In what ways do we sometimes prioritize our comfort over God’s plan?

Wednesday: Jesus speaks about taking up our cross. What does this mean to you in the context of your own life? Are there specific areas where you feel called to embrace sacrifice or challenge?

Thursday: Jesus poses a profound question about what it means to gain the world yet lose one’s soul. How do you interpret this in today’s context? What are the “gains” that can distract us from our spiritual well-being?

Friday: Reflect on what it means to truly follow Jesus. What are some practical steps you can take to deepen your commitment to him today? How can you apply the teachings from this passage in your daily life? What changes do you feel prompted to make in your attitude or actions?
