The JOY of Christmas Devotional Guide
Monday: Read Luke 2:8. Most depictions of the shepherds in the Christmas story make them look dignified. The truth of the matter is that there was probably a stench emanating from them. At the time of Jesus’ birth, shepherds were considered “low class” at best. Most folks saw them as outcasts and misfits. They never bothered to bathe and were considered untrustworthy. To the religious community, they were spiritually unclean and not allowed to participate in sacred ceremonies and holy days. And these are the ones God chose to announce the greatest event in history? God chose to reveal the gift of Christmas first to the shepherds because they were the most receptive to the message. They did not have anything to prove. They had no reputation to protect. They had no fear of being called crazy. More than anyone they were open to the impossible – God was being born among them! The shepherds heard the angels speaking and singing, but not everyone heard it – just the shepherds. They were in the fields, far enough away from bustle of city to hear the sacred sounds. Most of us don’t hear this well. Think of how the noisiness of our world drowns out the voice of God. Can you think of a time when distractions caused you to miss something meaningful?
Tuesday: Read Luke 2:10. The angel’s announcement in verse 10 speaks of the unspeakable joy of Christmas. The birth of Jesus signifies the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior who will bring salvation and reconciliation. Ponder the significance of this good news in your own life. In what ways has your relationship with Jesus brought you joy and changed your perspective on life? Take a moment to express gratitude for the gift of Jesus and the joy he provides for you.
Wednesday: Read Luke 2:12. The shepherds are given a peculiar sign that would enable them to recognize Jesus: “You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” I am sure the shepherds were a bit surprised to know that they would find the King of Kings in such a humble place. Why did Jesus come in this manner? Ponder the lessons of humility that this sign holds for us. How can we learn to embrace humility and simplicity in our own lives as we seek to follow Jesus, especially during the Advent and Christmas season.
Thursday: Read Luke 2:13. In verse 13 a heavenly host of angels joined the first angel, praising God and declaring peace on earth. Can you imagine what that heavenly chorus sounded like to the shepherds? It must have been awe-inspiring. Reflect on the significance of the angels’ proclamation of peace. In what ways has Jesus brought you peace in the midst of life’s challenges and uncertainties? Pray for a deeper experience of his peace in your life and for the world around you.
Friday: Read Luke 2:15. The shepherds’ response to the message of the angels was immediate. They didn’t waste any time to find the newborn Savior. They were also quick to share the good news with others. Consider the shepherds’ faith and obedience in responding to God’s call. How can we follow their example? Pray for the willingness and courage to respond to God’s call to share the good news of Jesus with those around you.
